Who We Are
A letter from our founder
When I learned of the systematic reproductive injustices against marginalized communities, I dedicated my life to facilitating spaces for healing, equal access, and justice. With over 10 years as a doula, I’ve seen firsthand how the support and advocacy of a birth team help our clients defy the odds: my doula agency, Sweet Bee Services, has walked our majority WOC clientele and their families through over 100 births with a 0% mortality rate.
In that time, my team and I have identified the postpartum period as a timeframe ripe with opportuniy to prevent the over half of pregnancy-related deaths that occur within a year after birth. In the past few years, Sweet Bee Services has expanded its postpartum services and offered monthly postpartum doula training in partnership with the National Black Doula Association, of which I am a founding member. However, we are on a mission to do more. Thus, the vision for Salama Wellness was birthed.
The Salama Wellness founding team has acquired some major wins along the way, including being named a rewardee of Johns Hopkins University’s Social Innovation Lab accelerator program, United Way of Central Maryland’s Baltimore Changemaker Challenge, and a finalist for Pharrell Williams’ Black Ambition Prize.
We still have a long way to go to establish our presence in Baltimore, MD, and expand our reach, and we can’t do it alone. We’re inviting you to join our movement so, together, we can address the major gaps in maternal care and ultimately end maternal mortality.
